Chapter 7
Aisha knew she should go home. Go home and get away from whatever the hell sheâd just experienced. She wasnât thinking straight. What the hell had come over her? Letting Aaron kiss her like that. Press her against the table. She swallowed, her heart beating a patter against her chest. She couldnât understand it. Sheâd never behaved like that before, so wanton and needy. No one had ever made her feel wanted like he had. Like he really saw her.
She had spent most of her life shut up in libraries, in labs, in lecture halls. Working every second of every day. What little free time she had she would use to call her parents back in New Jersey and assure them that she was happy. That choosing her career over a good husband was the right choice. And it was the right choice. She was happy. So what if whenever she caught sight of couples holding hands, walking down the street, all smiles for each other, she felt a flash of want, of hurt? So what if she was sick and tired of always being the odd number at her friendsâ dinner parties? So what if every single time she got an official invite to a formal event, she always left the âplus oneâ section blank? It didnât matter. She was doing what she loved. Teaching bright young medical students, pushing the boundaries of what humanity knew. It was meaningful and damn right it was worth it.
But she had never truly realized what she was missing. She had never truly realized how very alone she was. Not until she walked into that room and met Aaronâs electric gaze.
âOh, dear God.â She pressed her hand against her collarbone, cutting the engine and staring unseeing through the windscreen. When heâd touched her? His hand on her hip, the sizzling feeling of his fingers on her skin. It was indescribable. She didnât know her body could react like that. She pressed her knees together. She could still feel aftershocks of whatever the hell that had been riding through her body. It was as if he were still touching her, almost like she could sense him. But that didnât make any sense. She couldnât sense him. Vampires might have abilities like that but humans definitely didnât; she definitely didnât. She wasnât special. She had to be misreading it. He was a vampire. Everyone said they had an allure, a mind-altering presence. Sheâd thought it was something else; sheâd dismissed it as a kind of celebrity. That movie star glow. Sheâd thought it was fame that made vampires special. She was so wrong. That rip kick of lust had blown her doubts from her mind. It was like Aaron had a direct connection to her body and heâd turned every one of her senses up to max. But it wasnât her. It wasnât her that mattered, it was just him, just vampire abilities. Surely.
But what about our emotions? What about the way she felt
